Detailed itinerary of the safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Gisenyi

The 1st day of 5 days Congo gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hike safari is for transfer to Gisenyi upon arrival, upon your arrival at Kigali international airport you will be picked up and welcomed by your company’s safari guide. From the airport you will set off to Gisenyi at the shores of Lake Kivu, in Gisenyi you will check into your lodge, have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2: Transfer from Goma to Grande Barrier

The 2nd day of 5 days Congo gorilla and Nyiragongo safari you are to transfer from Goma to Grande Barrier, after morning breakfast you will checkout of your lodge and head to Goma with border crossing. At exactly 01:00 pm you have to be at Grande Barrier offices to completely fill all the necessary documents and acquire your mountain gorilla trekking and hiking permits, then head to Kibumba, check into your lodge and stay overnight.

Day 3: mountain gorilla trekking experience

The 3rd day of 5 days Congo gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo safari is for mountain gorilla trekking experience, after breakfast at your lodge you will head to Bukima ranger post for briefing session in which rules and regulation to be followed while in presence of mountain gorillas will be read to you. After the briefing headed by a senior ranger you will hike into the forests of Virunga in search the mountain gorilla group you been assigned to, looking for mountain gorillas takes about 1-3 hours and you are to spend only one hour with the gorillas when you locate them. After interacting with the mountain gorillas you will trek back to Bukima ranger’s post, meet your safari driver and head back to camp. In the evening you will have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 4: Hiking Nyiragongo volcano

The 4th of 5 days Congo safari is for hiking Nyiragongo volcano, after morning breakfast you will head to Kibati Ranger post by 08:15 am for briefing about the experience, hire a porter and other necessary equipment then start the hike. To reach the summit of the volcano takes about 6 hours depending on the physical fitness of an individual, the hike takes you through lava rocks and forests. When you reach the summit of the volcano you will be rewarded by the stunning views of boiling lava with a red glow, you will have dinner and spend the night at the volcano.

Day 5: descending Nyiragongo and transfer back to Kigali

The 5th day of 5 days Congo gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hike safari is for descending Nyiragongo volcano and transfer back to Kigali for a drop-off, after breakfast at the camp you will pack all your belongs and start descending the volcano which takes about 4 hours. When you reach the Kibati Ranger post you will meet your safari driver and set off heading to the border at Grande Barrier, when you reach Rwanda you will have lunch at the hotel then be dropped off either at the hotel or at Kigali international airport for your departure flight back home.
