Masai mara Park Fees : Masai Mara national reserve is one of the best wildlife reserves in the world and a sanctuary for an abundance of incredible wildlife, the reserve was named after the Maasai People who inhabit the area. The world Mara means spotted in the Maa Language which describes the landscape of Mara flecked with acacia trees and craters.

Masai Mara national reserve’s wildlife including the big Five (lions, leopards, cape buffaloes, leopards and elephants), other wildlife species in the park include cheetahs, African wild dogs, wildebeests, zebras, gazelles among others.

Masai Mara national reserve is located in the South – west region of Kenya spanning an area of 1,500 square kilometers, the reserve borders a number of unfenced private conservancies which are operated by the Masaai and Serengeti national park which it joins across the border in Tanzania.

Entry Fees

Entry Fees in Masai Mara national reserve are charged and paid by visitors depending on the location of accommodation one is staying at during their Kenya safari as follows

  • For visitors staying at the accommodation inside the reserve, you are pay USD 70 adults and USD 40 for child under 12 years of age.
  • For visitors staying outside the reserve, are to pay USD 80 per adult and 45 USD per 24 hours

  • These fees also apply to both the Narok side of the main reserve and Mara Conservancy in the western corridor of Masai Mara national reserve.

  • Visitors under the age of 18 years are eligible to 18 years

These park fees are applicable to when accessing Masai Mara national reserve through Narok county, Sekenani, Talek, Musiara and Oloolaimutia gates.

Note:

Most of the popular accommodation establishments (safari lodges and camps) in Masai Mara national reserve are found inside the reserve and they are best accessed from Sekanani Gate. These accommodations include Sarova Mara Camp, Keekorok Lodge, Governors Camp (main), Ol Moran Camp, Mara Explorer Camp, Mara Leisure Camp, Fig Tree Camp, Mara Intrepids Camp, Mara Simba Lodge and Sand River Masai Mara Camp. Clients staying in these accommodations are charged USD 70 per adult per 24 hours.

Vehicle Entry Fees

Each and every vehicle entering the endless plains of Masai Mara national reserve has to pay a fee which is charged basing on the carrying capacity of the vehicle.

Some of the accommodation facilities (lodges and camps) are located inside the Mara conservancy and these include Mara Serena Safari Lodge and Little Governors Camp. Rates for accommodations (safari lodges and camps) situated inside the reserve are different for those situated outside reserve.

Ranger Fees

While in Masai Mara national reserve you are required to have a ranger guide and here are the rates to hire rangers

Note:

  • hire two rangers for night is mandatory to all private campers for night time security, rangers are transported to and from your campsite. And food and accommodation for the rangers are required.

Maasai Mara national reserve is borders by several conservancies and ranches such as Mara North Conservancy, Mara Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Ol Kinyei & Enonkishu Conservancies.

Important points to note about park fees in Masai Mara national reserve

Resident rates

Resident rates are applicable to residents of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. Visitors of this category are required to present their National ID for Kenyan Citizens or Passport displaying work permits or appropriate Visa as proof for their resident status upon entrance.

Note: Visitors without a valid passport are required to pay the Non-resident rates.

Child rates

Child rates are applicable to persons 3 to 17 years of age, persons under the age of 3 are free.

Student rates

Student fees are  only applicable for persons aged up to 23 years old, sponsored by a recognized learning institution and in possession of a valid student ID and visiting the reserve on a pre-arranged school-organized trip or research authorized by ticketing office of the Masai Mara national reserve in Narok.

Note: Students must obtain a permission to use these special rates at least 2 weeks prior to their visit.

How to pay (Mode of Payment)

Masai mara park fees are paid in Cash in US Dollar or Kenya shilling at the entry gates, cashless modes are also accepted and can be made via Visa and MasterCard and  local Kenyan Mpesa phone payment.

While  making Masai Mara park fees payments, citizens and residents of Kenya are required to carry identification and proof of residence to be eligible to cheaper resident rates.

Pre payment – obtain tickets in advance through the KAPS company located in the KATO office, Longonot Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi.
