Out of Africa Lookout in Lake Nakuru National Park: Lake Nakuru National Park located in Central Kenya, 140 km north west of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, is a beautiful destination for bird watching, game viewing and of course spectacular views. The park that is home to over 400 bird species and over 50 mammal species is a definite stop for a safari tour. 

In Lake Nakuru National Park, you will enjoy bird watching activities viewing birds that include flamingos, African fish eagle, hamerkop, Goliath heron, pied kingfisher, verreaux’s eagle among others. One of the famous viewpoints in the park is the Out of Africa Lookout viewpoint. Out of Africa Lookout in Lake Nakuru National Park is located in south western part of the Lake Nakuru shores along the western border of the park, south of the park’s main gate.

Out of Africa Lookout is the one viewpoint in the park that gives you scenic views of almost the entire Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Nakuru and all the surrounding areas.  It’s a high and rocky spot that not easy to climb compared to all the other viewpoints in the park. 

Out of Africa Lookout gets its name from the movie Out of Africa; a movie popularised the beauty and serenity of Africa causing a growth in the number of tourists that visited Africa in that time of the movie to date, tourists visiting especially Lake Nakuru National Park to experience the spots that were portrayed in the movie.

Out of Africa Lookout was the part of Lake Nakuru National Park that was filmed and used in this movie Out of Africa hence the name Out of Africa lookout.  The shots of this particular area in the movie was so magnificent that most people who watched the movie wanted to visit Lake Nakuru National park to experience this particular part of the park that was so beautiful in the movie. Also the scenes of the movie that were shot at the Out of Africa lookout were romantic scenes, so people associate the viewpoint with romance. 

Out of Africa lookout though popular, it is the less visited viewpoint in Lake Nakuru National park  and this is because of its steepness and being really high, higher than the other viewpoints. Out of Africa lookout has a steeper bit of a climb compared to the Baboon Cliff; so people opt for the easier view point making out of Africa lookout less visited. However for those who brave the steep drive up the hill, they experience all the best this viewpoint has to offer including the romantic spots on the cliff that were filmed in the movie Out of Africa. People that visit this viewpoint experience the most scenic views of Lake Nakuru and all the surrounding areas. 

Out of Africa lookout boats some the most spectacular views of Lake Nakuru’s deep blue alkaline waters, the flamingos and all other birds, the entire Lake Nakuru National park and the surrounding areas including some parts of the Nakuru community. The breath-taking views at this viewpoint more than compensate for the steep climb; it makes every bit of the climb worthy it and you never regret being up there. 

Because the Out of Africa Lookout is high, high above the park’s ground and lake, it gives one a higher vantage point for awesome picnics, sightseeing, bird watching and game viewing. 

For People that don’t drive up to the viewpoint, they enjoy an exciting hike up this rocky spot.  

Like other viewpoints Lake Nakuru National Park, Out of Africa Lookout has sitting facilities and washrooms that are to be used for those visiting the viewpoint.

Out of Africa Lookout can be accessed from Lake Nakuru National Park’s main gate by car; it’s about a 30 to 40 min drive through the woodlands from the main gate to the view point. 

The Naishi airstrip in the park is really far from the Out of Africa Lookout, so when you use air to get to Lake Nakuru National Park you will need a car to get you from the Naishi airstrip to the Out of Africa Lookout.
