History of The Giraffe Center, Nairobi, Kenya

The Giraffe Center was started by Jock Leslie – Melville and his wide Betty and the centre’s works started in 1979, the inspiring couple came to realize that the Rothschild Giraffes were severely endangered with only fewer than 180 giraffes left in some areas of Kenya. They brought two giraffes to their home in Langate with the aim of breeding them, since then over 40 pairs of breeding giraffes have been realized back into the wild.

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife was set up and in 1989, the Giraffe Centre was born.

The Giraffe Sanctuary and Giraffe Center in Nairobi

The Giraffe Center, Nairobi has evolved into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kenya and Nairobi city as well, the Giraffe Sanctuary is a huge protected site where giraffes are able to wander free safely. Opposite the Giraffe Sanctuary is a 12 – acre area of bush where the Giraffe Center and the popular Giraffe Manor are located.

The Giraffes are still wild but have learned that visitors to the Giraffe Center in Nairobi mean food, they spend the night in the bush but every morning at sunrise, you will find them lining up at the sanctuary gate to cross the road into the Giraffe Centre. As you drive past the Giraffe center for about 100 meters, you will catch a glimpse of the giraffes from the gates either side of the road.

The Giraffe Center

The Giraffe Center also known as The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Center “Home to Rothschild Giraffe” has a gift shop and café and an information center providing a great source of information for visitors.  The center educates groups of visitors on the plight of the giraffes and the Centre’s rehabilitation program.

The climax of the visit to the Giraffe Center is the giraffes themselves.

As you walk around the center, you will be greeted by the towering forms of giraffes eating from the hands of their human admirers, a raised platform allows you to interact with the giraffes at head height, you can also stand at their feet and marvel at their lofty heights. Pallets of corn, wheat, grass and molasses are usually handed to visitors which the giraffes gracefully take from your hand. The pallets are dropped by the greedily giraffes are feasted on by the warthogs that are normally between the giraffe’s legs.

TIP – to get the Giraffe Kiss Photo – hold a pallet in your mouth and the giraffe will gently take it right out.

Still you can find a quiet moment to visit to interact with the giraffes on your alone time and the best time is during the morning hours before the large numbers of visitors arrive.

Tourists tend to visit the center to visit The Elephant Orphanage before they visit the Giraffe Center after lunch.

The Giraffe Sanctuary

The Giraffe Sanctuary is situated opposite the Giraffe Center, the sanctuary stretches all the way right to Nairobi National Park and is they are separated by Magadi Road.

The Giraffe Sanctuary is home to many different species of birds and many warthogs you can see wandering down the Gogo River, also you will enjoy scenic views of the Ngong Hills from the viewing platform. There are many warthogs living in deep black holes, other animals to lookout for include hyenas, leopards, lions which normally make their way into the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is normally cleared if a lion is around, however it adds a certain vibe of excitement to an otherwise sedate walk.

Giraffes are gentle giants, most of the time they are still wild animals and they can attack if provoked. They tend to head butt which is something you wouldn’t want to experience, so be mindful and respect the animals.

The Giraffe Manor

 The Giraffe Manor was bough from the Melvilles in the 1990s and has turned into one of the premier Luxury hotels in the world, to visit the manor you need to book for a spot about 9 months to a year as the demand is high. During your stay at the Giraffe Manor, you will meet and greet the giraffes, have breakfast and lunch with them and take closeup pictures with them.
